You selected a cube from Insert Cube in Excel and Office Bridge returned an error instead of opening it. This article explains what that message usually means, what you can check yourself in a couple of minutes, and what to send EBM Support if the cube still won't open.
ย
What you'll see
You open Excel, go to the EBM tab, choose Insert Cube, and pick a cube from the list. Instead of the cube connecting, Excel displays a small error window:
The error as it appears in Excel after selecting a cube from Insert Cube
Clicking OK closes the message and returns you to Excel. Nothing is broken and nothing has been changed in your workbook โ the cube simply did not connect.
What the error means
The code at the end of the message, 0x800A03EC, is a general-purpose Excel error. Microsoft uses it whenever an operation Excel was asked to perform could not be completed, so on its own it does not identify a cause. What it tells you here is that Office Bridge asked Excel to connect to the cube you selected and that request came back unsuccessful.
In the Insert Cube workflow, the most common reason is straightforward: the cube is listed, but it is not currently available to you. The list shows the cubes in your environment, and a cube can appear there before it is ready to be opened in Excel. That happens for a few reasons:
This is not something you did wrong. The message asks you to verify your access, but seeing it does not mean you lack permission or made a mistake. It is especially common for administrators, who see a broader list of cubes than they will typically open themselves.
What to try
These four steps take a few minutes and will tell you โ and Support, if it comes to that โ whether the problem is limited to one cube or something broader.
Try a different cube. Run Insert Cube again and choose a cube you have opened successfully before. If that one connects, the issue is specific to the cube you first selected โ not to Excel, the add-in, or your account.
Close Excel completely and try once more. Close every open workbook, reopen Excel, sign in if you are prompted, and insert the cube one more time. An expired sign-in session can produce this same message, and reopening clears it.
Confirm the cube is one you are meant to use. If you have never opened this cube before, check with your Catalyst administrator that it is intended for direct analysis in Excel. Some cubes in the list feed other reporting processes rather than serving as a starting point for your own work.
Send it to EBM Support. If the cube should be available to you, it needs attention on our side rather than yours. Repeated attempts will not change the result, so send us the details below and we will investigate.
What to send EBM Support
Including these five things in your first message lets us check the cube's configuration and your access straight away, without a round trip for more information.
Send us the five details above and we'll check the cube's setup, its last rebuild, and your access to it.
Other possible causes
Because 0x800A03EC is a general Excel error rather than a Catalyst-specific one, a few other conditions can produce the same message. What you are seeing alongside the error is usually enough to tell them apart.

In short: the cube list shows what exists in your environment, not everything that is ready to open in Excel today. If other cubes insert normally, the one that failed almost certainly needs attention on our side โ send EBM Support the cube name, a screenshot, your email address, and which cubes do work, and we'll take it from there.
