This guide covers the migration process from MDX (multidimensional) cubes to tabular models. While all new Catalyst implementations use tabular-only architecture, some legacy clients may still need this reference for historical context or completing deferred migrations.

Important Context
All new Catalyst implementations use tabular-only architecture. This article is maintained primarily for legacy clients who may have deferred their migration or need historical reference. Most organizations have already completed this transition. If you're unsure whether this applies to you, contact your EBM representative.
Background: MDX vs. Tabular
Historically, Catalyst supported two cube technologies: MDX (multidimensional expressions) and tabular models. MDX cubes used older OLAP technology, while tabular models leverage modern in-memory columnar storage.
📦 MDX (Legacy)
- Multidimensional OLAP cubes
- MDX query language
- Older Azure Analysis Services
- No longer deployed for new clients
âš¡ Tabular (Current)
- In-memory columnar storage
- DAX formula language
- Modern Azure Analysis Services
- Standard for all Catalyst deployments
The Migration Process
Migration occurs in two phases, both managed by EBM. User involvement is minimal but awareness of the process helps ensure a smooth transition.
Cube Conversion
EBM converts your MDX cube definitions to tabular format. Data structures, hierarchies, and calculations are translated to the new model.
Connection Update
Azure Analysis Services connection strings are updated to point to the new tabular model. Excel files need reconnection.
User Experience Changes
After migration, users will notice some differences in how they interact with Catalyst data in Excel:
Post-Migration Verification
After migration, verify your access and data:
Download a fresh cube from Analysis → verify connection succeeds
Spot-check key metrics against known values or previous reports
Reconnect any saved Excel workbooks to the new tabular source
Contact EBM Support if you notice missing data or calculation differences
Still on MDX?
If your organization hasn't yet migrated and you're experiencing issues with legacy MDX cubes, contact your EBM representative to discuss migration timing. All active clients should be on tabular architecture.
