As your organization evolves, through mergers, acquisitions, or annual planning, keeping your Catalyst environment up to date with the right company IDs ensures accurate reporting, clean data hierarchies, and efficient planning cycles.
Â
Adding a new company ID allows you to properly structure new entities for budgeting, forecasting, and consolidation. This is especially important when preparing for a new fiscal year, onboarding new divisions or clients, or updating reporting structures after organizational changes. It also ensures that integrations and automations relying on the Company field in Catalyst continue running smoothly and that user or group permissions remain aligned so internal users can access data for the new company.
Why Add a New Company ID?
There are several reasons you may need to add new company IDs in Catalyst:
New Fiscal Year Preparation: As part of your year-end setup, ensure all new legal entities, business units, or profit centers are reflected in Catalyst. This helps streamline budgeting and scenario planning before the year begins.
Mergers or Acquisitions: When a new company joins your organization, a dedicated company ID enables you to isolate their financials while maintaining roll-up consistency.
Client Onboarding: If your firm manages multiple client environments, creating unique company IDs keeps client data secure and segmented for accurate reporting.
Organizational Restructure: When divisions or departments are renamed or split, adding new company IDs helps maintain reporting accuracy without disrupting historical data.
By keeping your company hierarchy updated, you’ll avoid reporting discrepancies, streamline automation jobs, and ensure your cubes and integrations run cleanly into the new year.
Method 1: In-App Editing
This is the most direct and controlled way to add a company ID when working within Catalyst.
Navigate to Administration > Hierarchies.
Select Edit Company Hierarchy.
Switch to the Tree View tab.
Expand the parent group (node) where you want to add the new company ID (leaf).
Click the + button to add a new child node.
Enter the Company ID and Name in the respective fields.
Click Save.
This method is ideal when adding a small number of new companies or performing quick updates before year-end.
Method 2: Upload via Template
When working with multiple additions or restructuring your hierarchy at scale, using the upload template method can save time.
Go to the Export/Upload tab.
Apply any filters (optional—does not affect adding a new ID).
Under Excel Options, click Export.
Open the downloaded Excel file.
Add a new row at the bottom for your new company ID—do not edit existing headers.
Enter the Company ID and Company Name in the corresponding columns.
Save the updated Excel file.
Return to Catalyst, click Upload under Excel Options, and select your saved file.
Note: When using the upload method, make sure your new entry matches the format of existing rows (e.g., capitalization, delimiters, and ID structure). Incorrect formatting can cause upload errors or mismatched hierarchy data.
Best Practices
- Plan Ahead: Always create new company IDs before your next fiscal period begins to prevent failed data loads or missing records in actuals and planning cubes.
- Maintain Consistency: Keep naming conventions standardized across hierarchies to simplify cube mapping and reporting.
- Test Before Go-Live: If your Catalyst instance includes access to a sandbox or testing environment, create and validate new company IDs there first. Confirm that the IDs roll up correctly within hierarchies and reports before pushing the changes to production.
- Communicate with EBM: Notify the EBM Support whenever new company IDs are added. This ensures that any dependent integrations or automations ingesting company-level data are updated accordingly, preventing downstream data breaks or ingestion errors.
- Communicate Internally: Let your internal Catalyst users and administrators know about newly added company IDs. If your environment uses group- or user-level permissions on the company hierarchy, these may need to be updated so users can access the new company’s data.
By proactively adding new company IDs, you’ll keep your Catalyst environment structured, accurate, and ready for the year ahead. Whether you’re integrating new acquisitions, onboarding clients, or simply preparing for your next fiscal cycle, maintaining your company hierarchy ensures smooth data flow, better reporting, and fewer surprises when closing or forecasting.
