Seeing an error when uploading data from an Excel file connected to EBM into Catalyst? This guide explains why files saved in SharePoint or other network drives cause issues, and the steps you can take to ensure a successful data upload.

is up and running.Online files are not supported for upload in Catalyst, please save the file on the local
computer before uploading.Unknown, could not read file.Type not found, file corrupted. Why This Happens
This occurs when a file is stored in SharePoint, OneDrive, or another online/network directory. Catalyst requires local read/write access to process files, and those online paths block the access VBA (Excel’s automation engine) needs.
Catalyst uses Excel VBA, which can only interact with files stored on a local drive (e.g.,
C:\).Files saved in SharePoint or OneDrive aren’t treated as fully local, even when opened in Excel.
As a result, Catalyst cannot complete the upload unless the file is stored in a location with proper read/write permissions.
Workarounds
To upload successfully, use one of the following approaches:
1. Save a Local Copy
Open the file in Excel.
Go to File > Save As and save the file to a local folder on your computer that is not synced with SharePoint/OneDrive (for example:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents).Then upload the saved file to Catalyst.
2. Use the Upload Center in Catalyst
In Catalyst, go to the Planning tab, or open the dropdown menu in the top-right corner.
Select Upload Center.
Upload the file directly from your local machine.
3. (Optional) Run Through Cube Updater
If the methods above don’t resolve the issue, run the file through the Cube Updater. While this tool doesn’t inherently save files locally, it forces the creation of a new version of the file that you can download, ensuring it has local read/write access and is not automatically tied to SharePoint or OneDrive.
Future Support for SharePoint?
At present, this limitation is tied to Excel VBA itself. While our development team is exploring improvements, direct uploads from SharePoint and other online drives are not yet supported.
Need Help?
If you continue to encounter upload errors after saving locally, submit a request to EBM Support. Please include:
A screenshot of the error message, and
The file path where the file is stored.
This helps our team troubleshoot more quickly.
While this limitation can be frustrating, saving or uploading from a local copy ensures your data flows into Catalyst without errors. If problems persist, our EBM Support team is here to help with additional troubleshooting.
